ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The Edward Bramley Law Society aims to enhance the studies of its members by providing academic support, extra-curricular activities and other opportunities which help members improve themselves and their employability throughout their time at Sheffield Law School - all with a sense of belonging.  This is with great thanks to our many sponsors who make this all possible. We truly believe the work we do is highly beneficial to our members, whatever their career aspirations may be, and year on year we strive to increase the size of the society and it's impact.

So Where Did Our Name Come From?

The name of our society pays tribute to Edward Bramley. This inspirational solicitor provided lectures to help improve the skills of solicitors and article clerks within Sheffield, meaning the teaching of Law in Sheffield pre-dates the creation of the University of Sheffield itself. Edward Bramley started off as a solicitor and secretary for the Sheffield Law Society, helping to provide training to aspiring lawyers. He then continued his Legal work at The University of Sheffield working as the Head of Department in 1900-1906 before being promoted to the Dean in 1908.

Following this, he progressed to become the Treasurer in 1941-1946 and finally achieved a top position of Pro-Vice Chancellor 1946-1951. The University of Sheffield, honour his work with the Edward Bramley Scholarship for LLM students and of course, proudly bear his name for our society
